Your Birthday Night
Saturday, Nov 7. Eight people. Prices come from each place's own page or booking listing, checked Nov 3. Anything I estimated says so.
- It isn't the same money. A great dinner at home costs about $2,800 to $4,100 for 8 once you add the tip, rentals and cleaning. A great restaurant dinner costs about $2,000 to $2,600.
- The extra buys a chef who trained at The Fat Duck cooking only for your table, in a room with nobody else in it. For a birthday I'd pay it. That's my judgment, not something the numbers prove.
- Without Ken, go out. The other home chefs are a step down (an unnamed chef, thin reviews). Akira Back's semi-private table is in a dimly lit room that gets livelier on weekends, with a proven kitchen, and you can try to hold it tonight on OpenTable.
The catch: Ken hasn't said yes, his own supper club takes two Saturdays a month, and your dining table may only seat 6.
Tonight, five things
Each one is ready to go. Tap, check, send.
My birthday dinner is this Saturday, Nov 7. Starts at my place near College and Bathurst at 6:30, ends late.
Can you make it? Tell me by noon tomorrow, plus any allergies.
Nothing gets paid until you know who's coming. Both versions start at your place, so this text works either way.
Hi Ken, could you cook a private dinner for 8 at my place this Saturday, Nov 7?
It's my birthday. Loft near College and Bathurst, seated at 7, and we all need to be out by 10.
Do you bring plates, glasses and a server?
What would the total be? I'm deciding by Wednesday afternoon.
On OpenTable, pick "Semi Private Table, 8 to 12 Guests (Fri-Sat)" for Saturday at 7:30.
Open OpenTableCall 437-800-5967Read the cancellation terms on the booking screen first. Only hold it if you can cancel free until Wednesday night. If you can't, call and ask them to hold the table until Wednesday 6pm. You'll pick the family-style dishes ahead of time.
Count the chairs at the loft and measure the table. If it seats fewer than 8, book rentals by Thursday. Toronto Event Rentals listed a 10 ft table for 8 to 10 at $400.
Hi, could I book a table for 8 this Saturday, Nov 7, at 10pm?
It's my birthday. Is there a cover that night?
They take bookings until 11pm, then it's walk-in only. If you go to Akira Back, move it to 10:45.
Decide by Wednesday 6pm
- By Wednesday noon: you know who's coming.
- Ken says yes: home version. Cancel the Akira Back hold if you made one.
- Ken says no, or doesn't answer: Akira Back version. Keep the table if you held it. If not, book it Wednesday on OpenTable or call 437-800-5967.
- Want the bigger show instead? See Okeya at the bottom of the night section.
The night
If you'd rather have the most memorable dinner than the right room: Okeya Kyujiro in Yorkville. You take over the whole 10-seat counter at 8:15pm, walk in through a vending-machine door, eat over 25 courses, and the staff play a birthday song on instruments. It costs about $5,200 for the night, and the room is bright wood.

Hi, is a private booking open this Saturday, Nov 7, at 8:15pm for 8 people?
It's my birthday.
Do you charge for all 10 seats, and is the prepayment refunded if I cancel by Wednesday 8:15pm?
Groups prepay the whole meal. Only pay once they confirm in writing that it's refunded if you cancel. It can't promise to handle seafood allergies, and there's no gluten-free.
What each budget buys
Dinner only, all-in for 8: food, 13% tax, tip or service charge, and drinks ($400 bought for home, $80 a person at restaurants). For home it also includes rentals, candles and cleaning. Totals are my math from published prices.
Home: Nothing good. The only chef this cheap, Akshat Chawla at about $2,540 before setup, has 2 reviews.
Restaurant: Akira Back semi-private table $2,610, Bar Isabel $2,450, Mimi Chinese private room $2,250, Lyla Gold Room $2,050
Better: Restaurant
Home: Ken Yau $2,800 to $4,100. PrivATable about $2,950 plus travel and extra-chef fees they don't publish. Chef in the House about $3,600 to $3,950
Restaurant: Only sushi counters, both in light wood rooms: Yasu $2,880 (strangers on 4 of the 12 seats), Sushi Kiwami $3,970
Better: Home (my judgment)
Home: Nothing that can be confirmed this week
Restaurant: Okeya Kyujiro, the whole 10-seat counter to yourselves, about $4,630 for dinner
Better: Restaurant, if you want a show and can live with a bright room

About $6,300 if they charge for all 10 seats, in which case invite 2 more friends.
Over the whole night the gap narrows by about $320, since going out adds champagne at the loft and Ubers. Home runs from about $150 less to about $1,150 more than Akira Back.
Everything I checked
At home: 5 chefs
Trained at The Fat Duck, cooked at Nota Bene and Scaramouche. Playful tasting menus built on his family's Taishan and Hakka recipes. His studio makes its own ceramics, so ask whether he brings them. "Private dining experiences start at 160.00pp", recommended for 8 or more. He also hosts at his own studio, Goji Studio, 245 Carlaw Ave, Unit 306, the same building as your December apartment. That solves the seats and the 10pm rule, but "Goji Studio is currently not licenced and will not be BYOB," so no alcohol.
Catch: No answer yet, and his own supper club runs two Saturdays a month.
18-course omakase from $239 a person: lobster sashimi, otoro, uni, A5 wagyu. A chef, a server, tableware and setup included. Their site says they take bookings up to 48 hours ahead.
Catch: The chef isn't named, and the only proof is 3 testimonials on their own site. Travel and extra-chef fees aren't published. Non-refundable once you're inside 7 days, which you already are. Tell them no blowtorch.
An agency whose chefs include Rob Rossi (Osteria Giulia), Craig Harding (Campagnolo, Bar Prima) and Kyle Rindinella (Enoteca Sociale). "A 3-course dinner typically starts around $300 per person + HST for 6 people." Groceries and cleanup included; a server costs extra.
Catch: 50% deposit, which they keep if you cancel and can't rebook, plus 3% on cards. The named chefs run restaurants on Saturday nights, so ask who is actually free.
Plated 4 to 6 courses, $220 to $310 a person. His profile says he cooked at a Michelin-star restaurant. 4.76 stars from 31 reviews.
Catch: No refund inside 15 days, so you pay for it the moment you book. Plates and glasses aren't included.
Five courses at $185 a person, and a sommelier who pours and explains each wine for $90 more.
Catch: Their dinners run 3 to 5 hours, which doesn't fit 10pm quiet hours.
Ruled out: Akshat Chawla (2 reviews), Washoku Hana (no sign of activity since Jan 2025), CHEFIN ($540 a person, chef assigned after you pay), Raw + Ready (wants 14 days' notice), Spike's Table (seats 6), Quinton Bennett (left Enigma, now in BC), every hibachi chef (open flame in the loft).
Restaurants: 6 that fit
Semi-private table for 8 to 12 on Fridays and Saturdays, booked straight on OpenTable. $1,500 minimum, 20% auto-gratuity, 3 hours. Family-style menu $165 a person: tuna pizza, wagyu tacos, black cod, wagyu picanha. Dimly lit and livelier on weekends; OpenTable rates the noise "Moderate". The Globe and Mail called it a "dark room with thumping house music and a party vibe" back in 2018. 4.8 stars from 2,289 OpenTable reviews.
Catch: It's about 1 km from the Leafs game at 7, and OpenTable tags it "Fancy". It's semi-private, not a closed room.
A 10-seat Kyoto-style counter you enter through a vending-machine door. Groups can book the whole counter, but only at 8:15pm. Over 25 courses in about 2 hours, $355 a person. For birthdays they "celebrate with a birthday song performed on musical instruments."
Catch: The room is bright, warm wood (photo above). Groups prepay in full plus 20% service. Its FAQ says free to cancel more than 72 hours out, its booking page says 48, and neither says the group prepayment comes back. It "may not be able to accommodate seafood allergies," and gluten-free isn't available.
Private room for up to 12. Family-style menus at $85 or $105 a person, more for the bigger menus. Their pitch: "Darkly lit nooks with deep shades of red."
Catch: A recent review says it reopened "brighter than before" after a February 2026 renovation.
Private room, sharing menu $115 a person. The Infatuation calls it "dark and intimate."
Catch: Minimum spend and gratuity aren't published, so ask.
One table for 8 in the main room, tasting menu $85 to $150 a person.
Catch: 20% service charge, and every seating is 2 hours.
Chef's tasting for the table at $125 or $160, then LoPan upstairs.
Catch: You just picked it for your date, so it won't feel new.
Ruled out: Quetzal (buyouts need 2 months' notice), Prime Seafood Palace and Giulietta (bright rooms), Bar Prima and Linny's (white tablecloths), Sammarco (next to the arena on game night), Yasu and Sushi Kiwami (light wood counters you'd share).
After dinner: why Mrs Robinson
The Little Jerry, the old plan's pick, is walk-in only late at night according to its Resy listing, so 8 people at 10 is a gamble.
Also good: Prequel & Co.'s Botanical Room on Queen West (groups up to 12, business casual, cocktails $20 to $28, 647-368-6630). Bonne Nuit, a speakeasy behind La Plume ($450 minimum for 6 to 12, 3 hours). Ace Hotel's Soul Suite that same night, 9pm to 1am, free, but an RSVP doesn't guarantee entry.
Skipped: a limo ($150 an hour with a 3 to 5 hour minimum), a live jazz duo (it would compete with the toasts).
What I can do next
- Once Ken sends his menu, I'll slot the toasts between his courses so nobody talks over a dish.
- A one-screen invite page for your friends: time, how to find the laneway door, dress code and the bet prompt, so they arrive with bets ready.
- Send the Mrs Robinson and Okeya emails from your Gmail tonight and watch for the replies.
